Why we love: Boystown

Stats: 2 bed, 2 bath vintage apartment, no parking

Here's just a little preview of this incredible home tour: kelly green looking better than ever in Crystal's dining room. Living room book shelves arranged by color, in a rainbow. Gorgeous wall art that was "just whipped up!" Somewhere amidst all of this creativity you will find Crystal, her husband Leon and their beautiful girls, Brianna and Alina.

As the interior designer at local custom furniture store, MegMade, none of this decision genius should come as any shock, but I think what really got me is Crystal's ability to mix adult sensibilities with an accessible, kiddie-friendly vibe. In addition to providing a veritable "guide to making your house look awesome," Crystal and family also share all of their favorite local hangs--including a place where you can get upwards of 10 bags of fresh produce for $25!

How long have you lived in your home?
Eight months. We moved from Lakeview to give our two daughters more space. We were looking for something in a vintage building, but with modern amenities.

How long do you plan to live here?
We don't plan on moving any time soon, but we will have to move in four years when Brianna starts middle school. Lincoln Park, Wilmette and Winnetka are top contenders for us.

What is your favorite part of your home?
Our last home didn't have a dining room, and we are big on family dinners, so I'd probably say our dining room. Because both of us work full-time, we put a big emphasis on connecting at the end of the day. I can see this home as the hub for Thanksgivings and Christmases to come, when we have family from all over the world visit.

What is your least favorite part of your home?
I really wish we had one more bedroom, and that we were a few floors higher so our views were better. We are also low enough that we can sometimes hear the traffic. But really, I love 99% of our home!

What is your favorite part of your neighborhood?
I love the people that live in our area. Having moved here from Oregon, I appreciate a liberal and diverse crowd! There are also tons of family-friendly activities within walking distance like Lincoln Park, The Nature Museum and the Zoo

What is your least favorite part of your neighborhood?
Street parking. It can get very congested around here, especially during Cubs season.

What are you favorite local establishments?
Angelina's Ristorante: The girls love the bread, I love the mussels!
Treasure Island: We'll make a trip to the grocery store into an outing and walk
Nirvana Nail Salon: My standby
Lake Michigan: Every time we go I'm transported to another world

How do you get to work?
We both drive. My commute is about 20 minutes to MegMade at Belmont and Western and Leon drives downtown, which takes about half hour.

Where do you grocery shop?
We do a combination of Instacart (for heavy things and diapers), Treasure Island and Stanley's, which is amazing for fruit and vegetables--and super cheap! We will leave with ten bags of fresh produce for $25.

Are you friends with your neighbors?
Kids make it very easy to meet new people. We will see kids in Brianna's class at the store or Park and we'll strike up a conversation with their parents.

Does your neighborhood feel safe?
For the most part, yes. This area has gone through such a huge transition over the years, and it's so much better than before.

What is the general vibe of your neighborhood?
Fun, laid back, colorful!

Are some areas of your neighborhood more favorable than others?
Yes, and I call it the pocket of awesomeness, which extends from Addison down to Belmont, and from the lakeshore to Halsted. Living here, you're close to Broadway and cute shops, the Lake and Lakeshore Drive.
