Why we love: Budlong Woods

"It's very important to me to live and make in Chicago," says Bergen, owner of Lilla Barn Clothing. Along with her husband and young daughter, Bergen lives in Budlong Woods where she sews for 4-5 hours per day to keep up with the demand for her line of kids clothing.

With her roots in Iowa, Bergen was active in 4H growing up, so when she was pregnant with her daughter and it came time to nest, she naturally returned to sewing and creating. Once her daughter was born and people could see her clothing creations, Bergen found herself sewing for more than just her family. And what started out as an Etsy storefront has turned into a full-on online store, with pieces also available at Heritage Littles. Her colorful, joyous esthetic shines through in her clothing and her home--especially her incredible studio!

How long have you lived in your home?
Two years.

Why did you originally move here?
We wanted a bigger place close to Andersonville and Ravenswood.

How long do you plan to live here?
Actually, we just sold our home! We didn't expect it to sell so quickly, but we're very excited.

What is your favorite part of your home?
The light and the garbage disposal. I hadn't had one before now as an adult, and it's a game changer. I also love our en suite bathroom.

What is your least favorite part of your home?
The kitchen feels very small, and we like to hang out as a family in the kitchen.

What is your favorite part of your neighborhood?
I love that we're close to everything: Andersonville, North Park and Ravenswood.

What is your least favorite part of your neighborhood?
I don't like that I feel there is no where to walk--we can't even walk to the grocery store. There's not a lot in to do in the area, and not a lot of establishments.

What are you favorite local stores?
Over Easy Cafe. Tre Kronor and Hop Leaf.

How do you get to work?
I work from home, but my husband drives to Wheeling.

How long is your commute?
He leaves at 6am and returns at 3pm, and his commute is about 45 minutes.

Where do you grocery shop?
The Whole Foods on Peterson and the Mariano's on Lawrence.

How often do you walk around your neighborhood?

Where do you plan to move next?
We're moving to a single family home in West Ridge!

Are you friends with your neighbors?
Yes, we sometimes hang out together on the shared patio. It's nice to know who you're living by.

Does your neighborhood feel safe?

What is the general vibe of your neighborhood?
Mostly families, quiet--we really don't hear traffic or ambulances.

Are some areas of your neighborhood more favorable than others?
I'd prefer to live around Lincoln Ave. over Western Ave. since the construction is so bad.
