Why we love: Old Town

Stats: 1 bed, 1 bath apartment

If there was such a thing as a neighborhood evangelist, Lauren of Lake Shore Lady Blog, is Old Town's. After spending a few years in New York working toward an acting career, Lauren moved back home to Chicago, the Lakeview neighborhood specifically. But after never feeling settled and even a bit isolated in Lakeview, Lauren decided it was time to come home to her true love: Old Town.

And since moving in two years ago, Lauren has made her little corner of the Old Town universe truly her own. As a fashion/food blogger, she's decorated her bedroom with her gorgeous shoe collection, and knows the ins and outs of every local market.

How long have you lived in your home?
Two years.

Why did you originally move here?
I knew I didn't want to stay in Lakeview, and have always loved Old Town because it's so central. You can walk in any direction and find things to do. You can also easily get to the surrounding neighborhoods, like Lincoln Park, River North, Wicker Park and Bucktown.

How long do you plan to live here?
I really have no plans to move, this is a great place for me!

What is your favorite part of your home?
Definitely the kitchen. I obviously cook a lot, so when I saw the kitchen it was a "gasp" moment. I also love the natural light in the living room, which makes a huge difference since I shoot all of my food for the blog

What is your least favorite part of your home?
Actually the lack of natural light in the kitchen since that means relocating food to the living room for photography.

What is your favorite part of your neighborhood?
I love living on the border of Gold Coast and within easy walking distance of Wells St. and the beach. Also, everything around here is just so charming with the old Gold Coast homes and beautiful well-cared for neighborhoods.

What is your least favorite part of your neighborhood?
I really wish there were better restaurants within walking distance. We have some good restaurants, but no real foodie destinations. On the flip side though, I get out exploring the city more.

What are you favorite local stores?
Handle with Care: always has cute things
Real Good Juice Co: great little snacks and friendly people
Old Town Pour House: for a bar it's nice and clean
Kamehachi: good sushi

How do you get to work?
I work from home!

Where do you grocery shop?
I love Plum Market. Yes, it's more expensive, but they have great coupons, and it's worth it. I go in, see what's on sale and seasonal, and cook accordingly. They also have a great liquor selection and prepared foods. Sometimes I also shop at Treasure Island and I love the Green City Market when it's around!

How often do you walk around your neighborhood?
Every day, even if it's just to get outside and stretch my legs after sitting inside at a desk all day.

Where do you plan to move next?
I'm not sure, but I think I might switch neighborhoods. Maybe Wicker Park? It has the same great charm, but Division has better restaurants.

Are you friends with your neighbors?
Not really, I don't see them very often. I do love my doormen, however. They are all so friendly and nice.

Does your neighborhood feel safe?
Yes, 100%. Division/Clark used to be a bit sketchy, but that is all changing.

What is the general vibe of your neighborhood?
Charming. It can get a little fratty/young, but at the same time, we have lots of families, babies and dogs. It's truly a classic Chicago neighborhood in that way.

Are some areas of your neighborhood more favorable than others?
Everything has changed so much, but historically the Sedgwick/Schiller area wasn't the nicest.
